It is proposed by the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the Corporation of London who own the Barbican Estate, that Milton Court should be demolished and replaced by a 43 story residential tower which will somehow fund the building of new facilities for Guildhall School at the base. The tower is described as ‘slim' and proposals are currently being drawn up by an Architect, David Walker.
We oppose this and believe that Milton Court should be listed along with the rest of the Barbican Estate, of which it is an important part.
When the entire Barbican was originally put forward for listing Milton Court was recommended for listing at Grade II*, which means it is of more than local significance (the ordinary Grade II). Of all Listed Buildings only the top 8 % are listed Grade II* or Grade I. That is how import Milton Court is felt to be. However ‘...this proposal was resisted in a robust manner...' by the Corporation, who have now applied for a ‘Certificate of Immunity from Listing'. This is a legally binding agreement, which means that, if granted, it will be impossible to put forward Milton Court for listing for five years and any request would automatically be rejected.

“Milton Court is a beautifully resolved example of its kind and its period. In the shifting sands of city building, it looks like an eroded boulder, a sculpted lump of igneous rock. This is architecture as 21st century geology. We need to save it because without buildings like this in the city, we’ll stop understanding the history of the place. And architecture is as much about place as it is about economies, function or people”.
